The Old Testament Law is both wonderful and horrifying. It’s wonderful because it reveals the perfect nature of God. And, it’s horrifying because it reveals my own nature, which is far from perfect.
I honesty thought they were lying to me! I was in grade 5 when I received the news, but I couldn’t fathom how a wrestling match with Hulk Hogan in it could possibly be fake! Royal Rumbles had to be real! After I recovered from the shock, I continued to like wrestling for about another year or so, hoping to see my favourite wrestlers matched with one another. Have you ever wondered who would win a wrestling match between Adam and Jesus? Me neither. But, Paul found it incredibly important to write about! Get ready for a Royal Rumble like you’ve never seen as Paul compares Adam against Jesus in today’s video/audio!
I knew exactly what I was doing, and I can tell you that G.I. Joe got it wrong, knowing isn’t half the battle! I knew that eating the really big piece of the ice-cream cake that I found in the freezer would give me stomach cramps and make me feel sick 30 minutes later. But, in the moment, it didn’t matter to me. Actually, in the moment, I found that the warning against this behaviour excited me and I wanted to see if I could get away with it! Well, it’s 30 minutes later, and I didn’t get away with it. Wether our rebellious nature compels us to do mildly rebellious things like eating too much ice-cream cake, or much bigger things with greater penalties, it consistently hurts us and takes us away from the life we really want to be living. So, what’s the solution to our rebellious nature?!
I’m not sure if I can communicate how excited I was about receiving my tax refund! I was finally going to be able to pay off my Visa! Unfortunately, it seemed to be a trend for me: pay by Visa, make the minimum payments, and hope for a big enough return at the end of the year to pay it off. It made me feel a little sick, and kind of trapped, but it was life and it was how I felt I was able to win. Well, that’s not winning. Being debt free (except the mortgage), having an emergency fund, and saving for the future is a far better win! But, how does someone with a mountain of debt make the transition to a mountain of savings?! You can find your way forward by taking Dave Ramsey’s course “Financial Peace University.”
My two older girls (6 yrs and 9 yrs) were playing so nicely in the living room with their toys that the transition to screaming and hitting shocked me. But, no problem, I’m already prepared for this! I put them on the naughty step for a time out, restoring both the calm and the relationship. The naughty step is a wonderful tool for both correcting behaviour and reconciling two little girls. It is so effective that God uses a naughty step, too. Today’s text reveals how God’s naughty step, the cross, was effective at reconciling us to Himself.
As a growing Believer it took a long time for me to understand what it really meant that I was “dead to sin” and “alive to Christ.” I liked the words because they sounded impressive and promising, but I had no idea why they were important. I’m not sure at what point I really understood this, but I remember the wow-moment I had when I did. To keep it simple, you are free. But, that’s a little too simple so let me explain.
As I read I reflect and admit the truth revealed about me. It’s true that I had been completely rejecting God, and more than that, I was completely hostile to Him. Yet, as I continue to read, something within me jumps and shouts and feels confused yet elated as I discover that in my most oppositional moment Jesus still loves me. That’s true for you, too. As oppositional as you may be (or may have been) God continues to pursue you because He loves you. My hope is that today’s video/audio will affirm you and make you just as confused and elated as I can become.
My back and my knees are aching as I hang the last piece of drywall. Stepping back I take a look around the room and say to myself, “Wow, how in the world did I do all that?” The only reason I am able to renovate my basement is because some of my friends stepped up to teach me and help me, and there’s no other way it would be happening. Similarly, I can step back and take a look at who I am today and where I’m heading and say to myself, “Wow, how in the world did I ever get here?” The only reason I find any success today is because Jesus stepped up and helped me, and there’s no other way it would be happening. Success, with my basement and in life, came only when I stopped trying to do everything myself and I started surrendering some of my control.
As a husband and a dad of four, I’ve had some awesome moments to get really excited about. More exciting than any other moment in my life is the moment when I changed from being considered an enemy of God to being considered His friend. Today’s video/audio is filled with reasons why we can get excited about our faith in Jesus. (Heads up, it’s also my first attempt at green screen!)
